GCE Past Question Papers are an essential tool for every student preparing for the Cameroon General Certificate of Education (CGCE) Exams at both Ordinary and Advanced levels. The General Certificate of Education Examinations Ordinary and Advanced Levels normally mark the end of the fifth Form and Upper Sixth Form respectively of secondary general education.
The examination is broad-based and aims at measuring the candidate’s knowledge of the world around him, his capacity to think, apply, synthesize and evaluate knowledge and situations in relation to the subjects which he has studied in class at the ordinary or Advanced Levels.
The examinations are opened to external candidates on the same conditions as applied to those attending secondary schools. In addition, there is no limit to the number of sittings.
GCE Past Question Papers in the Exams are usually divided into two papers for the “O” Level and three papers for the “A” Level.
Made up of 50 questions and candidates are expected to answer all these questions.
Paper 1 carries 40 marks while paper 2 carries 60 marks.
Note that 3 of these 21 GCE Past Question Papers subjects have practical components. That is to say, 19 subjects at the Ordinary Level are two paper subjects while Food and Nutrition, Special Bilingual Education French, and Computer Science have three papers. That’s the practical being the third paper.
Each of these subjects has its specifications as regards the number of questions set per paper, the number of questions to be answered per paper and the scores and weightings are also different.
As far back as 1944, most secondary schools in Nigeria and the then Southern Cameroons took the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES) as their final examination taken at three levels:
Junior Cambridge was taken in form four, and Senior Cambridge was taken in form six. Students in Upper Sixth wrote the Cambridge Higher School Certificate Exams. In 1954, Southern Cameroons left the Cambridge Examination Board to take the West African School Certificate examination, which had been created in 1951. This went on until the reunification of Southern Cameroons with East Cameroon in 1961.
After the reunification of Southern Cameroons with East Cameroon, West Cameroon (former Southern Cameroons) withdrew in 1963 from the West African Certificate Examination to the University of London GCE Examinations. West Cameroonians continued with the University of London General Certificate of Education Examination until 1976 when the Cameroon Ministry of National Education took over the administration of the GCE Examinations.
It had been the preoccupation of the Ministry of National education to Cameroonize the University of London General Certificate of Education. With the reunification of former East Cameroon with West Cameroon in 1961, the Ministry of National Education with the strong need it felt to have an examination base was motivated to fully adopt the exams.
British and Cameroonian experts met in Yaoundé for feasibility studies for the Cameroon GCE from 5th to 6th January 1976 in which the main features of the examination were defined.
These features included name, organization, objectives of the Ordinary level and Advanced level subjects, number of sessions per year, types of questions, marking, grading, security measures, etc.
Finally, on 24th November 1976, the President of Cameroon, H.E Paul Biya signed Decree Nº 76/555 instituting the General Certificate of Education Examination in Cameroon. A provisional program for the Cameroonization of the GCE examination was also drawn up, and the first session of the exams took place in June 1977.
It was also agreed that subject to the maintenance of appropriate standards, the University of London would be required to do all that it could to ensure the broad recognition of the Cameroon GCE examination results and certificates.
The first Cameroon GCE examination was conducted in June 1971. The marketing of the GCE examination was done in the lone center of Yaoundé on a rotatory basis until June 1987. Using the rotatory basis, subjects marked in one center in one year were marked in another center the following years.
Since 1993, they have been organized annually by a body known as the Cameroon GCE Board.
According to a book titled "The Cameroon GCE Crisis: A Test of Anglophone Solidarity," and authored by Nyamnjoh, Francis B., Akum, Richard Fonteh, the Cameroon GCE board was officially created in 1993. The creation of the board was championed by Anglophone community groups, such as the Teachers' Association of Cameroon (TAC), led by Mr. Peter Chateh; churches; Confederation of Anglophone Parents’ Teachers’ Association of Cameroon (CAPTAC), with other trade union groups also playing a pivot role in the creation of the board.
A consensus was only reached 10 years later in October 1983 by the Government of Cameroon and these groups to create an examination board to award certificates to Anglophone students in Cameroon.
A text of application was signed on October 12, 1993, (Text of Application; Order Nº: 112/CAB/PM) to define and determine the administrative and financial organization of the Board. This led to the appointment of the pioneer Chairman of the Board. The Board Chairman was installed by the Minister of National Education on 25 October 1993 in Buea and that marked the starting point in the functioning of the Cameroon GCE Board.
The initial decree was further amended and completed by two other decrees: Nº:97/45 and Nº:91/46 both of 5 March 1997. These amendments broadened the scope of activities of the Board to include the organization of examinations in English leading to the award of the Baccalaureat Technique, the Brevet de Technique, the Brevet d’études Professionnelles, and the Brevet Professionnelle Certificates.
The Cameroon GCE Board held its first session on 19 November 1993. Since then GCE examinations in Cameroon have been organized by the Cameroon GCE Board.
The Cameroon GCE Board organized the first sessions of its examinations as follows:
Subjects at both the “O” and the “A” levels of the Cameroon GCE Exams are classified into two major categories: Arts and Sciences.
Arts and Science Subjects at the “O” Level
Some subjects fit into both categories while others are compulsory for all students. . The assessment system of the GCE at the O level is based on grades (A, B, C, D, E, U).
Subjects at the “A” level are also categorized into two main categories: Arts (A) and Sciences (S) series.
The subjects are independent and do not have any coefficients. The assessment system of the GCE at the A Level is based on grades (A, B, C, D, E, F).
The Arts series is referred to as the A and there are 5 in number. These 5 are A1, A2, A3, A4, A5.
The Science Series Are Referred To As the S And There Are 8 In Number. These 8 are S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8.
In addition, other subjects can be added to these other subjects like Information Communication and Technology (ICT), Computer Science, Religious studies, commerce, and more.
All subjects at the Ordinary level consist of two papers with different weights as indicated below:

Why GCE past are questions important for every candidate? How do they help you get better grades?
For most students who are taking the GCE Exams for the first time, past questions give them a feel of the format, style, and question structure of the examination. So past questions will help you know what to expect as you attempt answering the questions.
Time is always an essential factor in the GCE Exams and most students sometimes lose marks not because they do not have answers to the questions but because they run out of time. So if you want to set yourself to work at the right speed and finish your questions in time, you try solving different past questions from time to time and try as much as possible to finish in time. This will help you master how to quickly finish your questions in time. Remember, it is always important to attempt all questions in order to increase your chances of scoring better marks.
While solving past questions, you will always try to dig more to find answers to question you cannot provide answers to. Such questions would have embarrassed you in the hall but you will avoid that if you had already gone through them while solving past questions. It is important to take time to check the answers to the questions while as you solve them.
A paper may not be repeated entirely but most questions you will find at the GCE are questions that must have appeared a couple of times in previous sessions. When you solve past questions over and over again, there is some sort of confidence that just comes naturally that you will be able to ace the exams. This gives you a positive attitude and a feeling of excitement and expectation. There is thus no examination fever.
Attempting a past GCE paper under full exam conditions will help you adapt to the exam format, structure, time and test your preparedness before the exam.
• Set a timer, and strictly follow it. For example, if you are answering an “O” Level paper 1 or paper 2, you should ensure you stop answering the questions in 1.5 hours for paper 1 or 2.5 hours for paper 2. In the same light, if you are answering an “A” level paper, ensure your timer is set for 1.5 hours for paper 1, 3 hours for paper two, and 3 hours for paper 3.
Creating a realistic time pressure will help you to figure out whether you need to work on time management in your exams, or whether you will have extra time to think through your answers.
• Switch off your phone, or put it on silent or somewhere where you won’t be distracted.
• Ensure your notes are kept far away from you and do not Google things while you are answering the question. Remember you are testing yourself to see how prepared you are for the exams and where you need improvements. So everything should be coming out of your brain.
• Ensure you are in a calm atmosphere. Turn off the music, and get rid of those snacks.
Going through GCE past question papers will help you get used to the structure and typical wording of the exam paper for every subject.
It’s really important you know what to expect so that there aren’t any surprises on the day of the exams. Get to know the structure for each of your subjects, take note of the number of questions you are required to answer for every subject, find out if there are compulsory questions, find out if the paper is divided into sections, how much time you should be spending per question,
In addition, find out if you have covered all the topics you find on the paper. This will help test your level of preparedness.

If you can lay your hands on marking guides, they will help you work out where you have gained and lost marks, and will also enable you to know how well you are answering the GCE past question papers.
Some students always just assume they know the topic so well. But I can tell you for a fact, you may be surprised to see that there are things you thought you knew whereas you don’t in actual fact. Marking guides are always very specific and will help you know what exactly is required for every question. Note that there are sometimes key terms the examiner wants to see before giving you marks. You have to touch those exact points and if you don’t, you may get very little or no marks for that question.
This is why using a marking guide is essential. It helps you not to lose any marks for questions you have understood but failed to answer in the way the examiners want.
