The Cameroon GCE results 2023 edition Cameroon General Certificate of Examination have been released. The Cameroon GCE board released the results of GCE 2023 this Saturday Today, 21st August 2022.
The Cameroon General Certificate of Examination Board, GCE revealed that for the Cameroon GCE results 2023, a total number of 110,916 candidates registered for the examinations while 98,015 effectively wrote the examinations nationwide.
Statistics indicate that 66,846 passed recording a percentage pass rate of 74.24%
According to the GCE board, there was an 11.97 percentage improvement in the general performance of the examination compared to last year. In 2021, the success rate stood at 62.27% and this year it has increased to 74.24%.
The pass rate for Cameroon GCE results 2023 per level in the different examinations organized by the GCE board stands as follows:
Advanced Levels Generals = 78.36% pass
Advanced Levels Technical = 89.34% pass
Ordinary Levels Generals = 62.15% pass
Advanced Levels Technical = 67.34% pass

The GCE board also revealed that 37 outstanding candidates scored 25 points out of the 25 available at the Advanced Level with 5 A grades.

Letter grades are used and below is the grading system used by the Cameroon GCE board for the examinations it administers at the GCE Technical and General Education at Ordinary Level, Advanced Level, ITC and ATC:
Letter grades A, B, and C represent a passing grade, with the A grade being the highest and the C grade being the lowest, and U (unclassified) representing a fail. Grades lower than C are not stated on the certificate.
The Ordinary level has 3(three) pass grades gotten after the marks for papers 1 and 2 have been combined together. They are; A, B, and C. The total mark is always on 100 (paper 1, 40% and paper 2, 60 %). The marks for the different grades are seen below:
A grade = 75-100
B grade = 65-75
C grade = 50-65
The failed grades for the Ordinary level are D, E, and U. In years when the performances are generally very poor for a particular subject, Chief Examiners after a serious deliberation may decide to go as low as taking 45 points as a pass under C grade but will however apply only for that particular subject. Note should be taken that it will apply only for that particular examination session. Thus it doesn’t guarantee that 45 % will be taken as a C grade pass in subsequent years.
Grades also have points as follows; A = 3 points, B = 2 points and C = 1 point. Since not more than 11 papers can be registered in the GCE Ordinary Level, the highest number of points a candidate can score is 33 (if the candidate scored A grades in all the subjects he or she registered). There are usually prizes given to such candidates from the Ministry and even from their various schools.
Letter grades A, B, C, D, and E represent a passing grade, with the A grade being the highest and the E grade being the lowest. An F (fail) is not a passing grade and is not stated on the certificate
The Advanced level unlike the Ordinary level has 5 (five) passed grades; A, B, C, D, and E. This is done after the marks for Paper 1, 2, and 3 have been combined. It shows how both examinations vary. Marks for the A level are also graded on a 100. The marks for the grades are seen below;
A grade = 75-100
B grade = 70-75
C grade = 65-70
D grade = 60-65
E grade = 50-60
There is also a complimentary grade O to compensate candidates who almost scored a 50% for that particular subject (45-49%). This is to show that the candidate almost made it and the difference is a matter of few points. But the compensatory grade O is still a failed grade. Apart from O, there is F which is also a failed grade at the GCE Advanced Level. Just like what happens at the Ordinary levels, the marks for the last passing grade can be changed if the general results that year for that particular subject are very poor. Instead of 50 points, the Chief examiners for that subject after deliberation may decide to approve 45 points as an E grade pass. The mark for compensatory will be at 40 in such a situation.
NB: This exception can only be done if all or most of the candidates who took the examination did not perform well in that particular subject. Nevertheless, it will only apply for that particular year or session.
While the Ordinary level has 3 as the highest point, the Advanced level has up to 5 points. The points are given depending on the grade scored- A = 5 points, B = 4 points, C = 3 points, D = 2 points and E = 1 point. The highest number of papers a candidate can register in the Advanced level is 5, thus the highest point earned is 25.
Note: What we have below is still the results for the June 2023 session of the Cameroon GCE. The GCE Results 2023 Cameroon June shall be expected to be released between the 9th to 12th of August 2023.
GCE means General Certificate Examination. This examination has worldwide acceptance and can be used for entry into any university in the world.
GCE exams usually take place between May and June each year in Cameroon. Generally, in Cameroon General Certificate Examinations are taken by two major sets of people.
The first set of candidates are those who have carried out five years of preparation after living primary school, referred to as Ordinary Level students sitting for the O Level certificate. The second set of candidates are those who have carried out two years of studies after obtaining the Ordinary Level certificate and are said to be sitting in for Advance Level exams to obtain the A Level Certificate.
The Cameroon General Certificate of Education Board known as Cameroon GCE Board is the public examination board responsible for setting examinations, marking them, and distributing results for Anglo-Saxon Cameroonian secondary school students at two stages; Stage 1: The GCE Ordinary Level ("O Level"), a subject-based qualification conferred as part of the General Certificate of Education, for students having completed a 5-year secondary education program, with students qualifying to sit the GCE O' Level examinations; and Stage 2: The GCE Advanced Level ("A Level"), another subject-based qualification conferred as part of the General Certificate of Education, as well as a school leaving qualification offered by the educational bodies and authorities to students completing secondary or pre-university education, for students having completed a 2-year High School education program, and who have previously sat and been successful in at least 4 GCE O' Level subjects. GCE A' Level examinations are written by upper sixth students.
The General Certificate of Education is a pure UK system of education adopted by Anglo-Saxon Cameroon.
In the 2015/16 academy year, about 182,416 candidates sat for both the GCE examinations in Cameroon with over 138,000 candidates for the O' Level and 46,000 for the A' Level examinations.
The Cameroon GCE board was officially created in 1993, according to a book titled “The Cameroon GCE Crisis: A Test of Anglophone Solidarity.” The book says the creation of the board was spearheaded by Anglophone community groups, such as the Teachers' Association of Cameroon (TAC), lead by Mr. Peter Chateh; churches; Confederation of Anglophone Parents’ Teachers’ Association of Cameroon (CAPTAC), with other trade union groups also playing a pivot role in the creation of the board.
It took 10 years, from 1983 to October 1993 for a consensus to be reached by the aforementioned groups and the Government of Cameroon to create an examination board to award certificates to Anglophone Cameroonian students.
Before the Cameroon GCE board came to existence in 1993, certificates were awarded to Anglophone Cameroonian students by the General Certificate of Education in the UK as it was a Trust Territory under British administration (known as British Cameroons) from 1922 to 1961.
Trust me when I say GCE O-Levels are really simple to ace. I got straight As for O-Levels and it wasn't much of a challenge, to be honest.

Cameroon GCE results 2023 release is one of the most awakening moment in the country, as it brings to light the reality of the effort put in place by students, and enable them to see if their hard work was rewarded or if it was not good enough in the course of their preparation.

The Cameroon General Certificate of Education Board releases the results of successful candidates each year after the marking and grading have been done by the board. At the end of the year’s written session, the scripts are transferred from the “save” of each accommodation center to the GCE Board in Buea, Molyko.
The GCE Board selects the best teachers from each school to take part in the marking. Usually, old and experienced teachers are mostly selected to ensure they do a perfect job with the marking (including teachers who did moderation of questions).
The GCE Board also recruits part-time secretariat workers (trustworthy individuals) who flap-fold and code the scripts (this is to prevent markers from identifying either the name of a candidate or the center number). Hence, an examiner can’t favor a particular candidate he or she knows. The secretariat members also erase marks made on the Scripts.
The secretariat does the coding before examiners arrive at the different marking centers to begin the correction of scripts. Marking is done not more than 2 weeks and in the process, secretariat workers go through the marked scripts to ensure that the marks given to a candidate corresponding to the number of ticks or sub marks. Any mark more or less than what the candidate is normally supposed to earn calls for concern.
The Script is taken by the room head to any of the Chief Examiners who call the examiner whose name appears on the script to correct it. Examiners noted for repeated incorrect marks and other mistakes can be sanctioned.
There are two checks done after a script is marked: A-Checking by the Chief Examiners and B-Checking by the secretariat workers. At the end of each task (coding, flap-folding, marking, A-Checking, and B-Checking), the name of the individual who does it is expected to be written in a given space provided on the form. In the case of mistakes, poor work, wrong coding, dirty work, mixed or unarranged scripts, the secretariat worker whose name appears on the form is summoned to do corrections and reprimanded if need be.
It is a serious, confidential, and careful job such that secretariat workers are prohibited from talking about things that happen in the working rooms for the purpose of confidentiality. This explains why only intelligent, educated, and trustworthy individuals who have been screened are taken for the secretariat job.
The secretariat workers are placed under the strict supervision of selected GCE Board workers from when papers are taken from the Board to the marking centers and back. They are divided into different centers and each center is given a good number of rooms for the secretariat workers to be able to work freely and comfortably.
Each secretariat center has a Head and assistant, coupled with a few other individuals. Each room has a Room Head who does the most important tasks and sensitizes the secretariat members on how to do each task. They also maintain law and order in their various working rooms.
On the other hand in the marking centers, examiners are controlled by Chief Examiners. Chief Examiners ensure that markers arrive at the marking centers on time and do their jobs the way it should be done.
Before marking begins, markers are expected to work on possible marking guides to ease their job. But since some examiners might have been called up late to replace others who aren’t available, harmonization of a marking guide is done again in the marking rooms to avoid inconveniencies with different ideas and notions. The final guild is then used generally by all the markers of that particular subject throughout the marking session.
Different subjects are marked in different places, explaining why marking is always done in many towns and as well schools. Some of the famous places where marking usually Take place are BUEA, BAMENDA, AND LIMBE. This is due to the presence of the GCE Board in Buea which is a pure Anglo-Saxon exam.
Compulsory subjects like English, French, and Mathematics usually have more markers than other subjects especially at the Ordinary level because they have more scripts and it ensures that all examiners finish with marking at the same or almost the same day. This is usually done in the month of July each year and the results released the same month, though it was done in September last year due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Examiners finish their task at the end of the marking and A-Checking while the chief examiners decide the grading depending on the performance of candidates in the examination for that particular subject. Therefore, a subject that most candidates scored high marks will have a high grading system while a subject that most candidates failed will have a low grading system.
The secretariat continues with the B-Checking and booking in of scripts to ensure none is missing. At this level, their job is also completed and only the technical secretariat workers continue with the input of marks into the system. This is only done in Buea at the GCE Board by confidential computer experts.
At the end of the input, the results are evaluated and percentages are calculated. Last but not the least, the results for both Ordinary and Advanced levels are compiled and finally released officially by the Cameroon General Certificate of Education Board for both General and Technical education.
The entire process takes about 3 weeks highest for the results to be released. In some years, secretarial work for the GCE Board is done in shifts in order to catch up with time in cases where it was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances or very important events.
In this regard, more examiners and secretariat workers are taken to work in shifts (day and night shifts). The secretariat however normally works in 3 shifts and in case of trying to catch up, it is increased to 4 per day. Workers for the session choose the number of sessions they can comfortably do in a day.
The compilation of the GCE results is a long and careful process such that it is almost impossible for mistakes to be made when it comes to coding, counting of marks, filing of marks, and grading. This is because many individuals go through a script in all the phases to double-check and ensure mistakes have not been committed.
At least 2 secretariat workers work on a park of scripts which comprises 20. One does the reading of the codes and the other does the writing. In the end, the work is checked by another pair of secretariat workers. During B-Checking, they also go through the mark sheets to ensure that the marks on the mark sheets correspond to what is given to each candidate and in case a mistake has been made, the room head takes it to the marking room for the examiner to correct it.
Even at the level of examiners, it is ensured that no mistakes have been made especially when it comes to counting marks.
Chief Examiners are responsible for double-checking (A-Checking) all the scripts and if everything is in order, they write their names in a given space and sign to indicate that they have validated the mark given to the candidate. In case of wrong marks, they correct it before it is sent to the secretariat for B-Checking (second counting).
Thus with the nature of the process, mistakes cannot be made like what some candidates say or believe when they receive failed results.
Despite the fact that marking is done in different places and towns, the Mark sheets are taken back to the GCE Board in Buea, Molyko. That is where marks are entered into the system (input of marks) by software experts and computer literates who are both GCE Board workers and a few other recruited secretariat workers.
It should be noted that grading is done at the marking centers and not after the input of marks into the system. The marked scripts at this level are no longer needed so they are kept at the GCE Board save for a number of years for the sake of transparency and clarity.
Candidates who aren’t satisfied or sure about their grades can request for the script or scripts to be re-marked. The candidate pays a handsome amount of money for a single script to be remarked. For this reason, the marked scripts are always kept preciously in case need arises in the future.
Analysis of the GCE results 2023 by subjects and schools is done only after the input. The general percentages for both passed and failed are gotten from the data system. This is what determines if the general results are better or worse than the previous year.
When the General Certificate of Education results 2023 for both General and Technical sections are released, it is officially placed online on the GCE Board website.
The Ordinary level results and the Advanced level results for both General and Technical education are released separately according to center numbers (from the first center number to the last). Statistics for each school are also provided. It makes it easier for candidates to see their individual and school results. The different schools extract their GCE results 2023 and make statistics of success and failure by subjects.
In the past due to the lack of advanced technology, the GCE results are read over the radio for a good number of days before published in newspapers. It made things difficult for candidates who had to sit only beside the radio listening to hear their names.
The GCE Board also at one point resulted in selling the results to communication networks like MTN who requested a small token for the SMS sent by the candidate to get his or her results. There were a lot of complaints because what some candidates received through SMS from MTN and what they finally noticed on their results transcripts were different.
