BASIC INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET

The internet is an interconnection of the networks i.e. it is an international network of networks.

The language use by the internet pages is the HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language).

The measure way use by people to send information across the internet is by using the two protocols (TCP and IP). Hence computer on the internet communicate using TCP/IP protocol.

IP (Internet Protocol) is a set of rules used to send information between computers on the internet.

TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) adds and extra information to each packet to make sure that when they arrive their destination none of them is damage or missing. If any is missing or damage, the TCP send information back to the source for replacement before assemble.

ISP (Internet Service Provider) is the Company that connects user’s computer to the internet.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an facility that permits users to download information, file or software on the internet.

Some Internet Definations

Intranet:

It is a private company network, sharing information and computer resources among company workers. It is a local area network for communication where many computers are connected locally within a building or a campus that uses the TCP/IP protocol.

Extranets:

This is a private network using the TCP/IP protocol and connects more than one organization. The purpose is to provide company workers with information that are limited to other users.

Fire walls:

It is a security system designed to protect and organization network from external threat.

Data communication is the transmission of digital messages to external device.

Data transmission channel:

There exist three types that exist;

1)    A simplex channel: Here message can only be transmitted in one direction i.e. from the source to the destination (transmitter to receiver). E.g. Radio or television communication.

2)    Half – Duplex: Here messages can be transmitted in both direction (to and fro) but not at the same time. E.g. Telephone communication

3)    Full – Duplex: Here messages can be transmitted in a to and fro direction and at the same time. E.g. MODEM (Modulator-Demodulator).
